It is a simple enough question, but one that keeps moms like me awake at night. How do you keep kids busy and active? If your children are anything like mine, they will never stop moving because they have that much energy. The first time I became a mom, it was difficult but not impossible. Now that my husband and I have three kids in total, it does seem impossible at times. The kids have to come first, though, so I am always striving for new ideas just to keep them quiet and stop their nagging! Here are a few things that I have come up with that seem to be the trick.
Find Them A Hobby
My eldest is a teenager, so I am always encouraging him to find a hobby. To be honest, he takes care of himself in some respects because he does what all his friends do, which makes my life easier! My youngest are harder, but there are still a few options available. Dancing is always a winner in my eyes because what little girl doesn’t love to prance around in a frilly skirt? And, for the parents with toddlers, preschool gymnastics is another one of my favorites.
Play Sport
Hobbies and sport are not the same things, so I thought I would split them into two. Of course, the kids could play sport as a hobby, in which case you wouldn’t need to bother. But, I have found that not all hobbies are active or involve playing outside. I am a big believer in keeping my children fit and healthy, so I don’t like them sitting inside watching TV all day. In America, there are a plethora of different sports to pick from, and which one you choose is down to you and your children. My tip for those of you with young children is to introduce them to soccer. Among kids, soccer is one of the most popular sports in the US.
Get Out Of The House
Because they are only young, it is my job to get them out of the house. If I let my eldest son, he would spend all day in his room playing video games! At the moment, they don’t understand how important it is to get some fresh air once in awhile. I am not going to say we are the perfect family who go for picnics and a long walk in the sun because we are not. But, I do try and make sure I go shopping and run errands on a regular basis. As the two youngest cannot look after themselves, they have to come with me, and that helps drain some energy.
Okay, I admit it – I do let them watch TV. Sometimes, I cannot think of anything else. And, the TV has to be the most effective method of keeping them quiet and entertained. Not only is the TV enjoyable for the kids, but it also gives me and the husband some much needed time off.
For the most part, I don’t see anything wrong with the kids watching television.
As long as they are not watching it twenty-four-seven.
